Throughout his tenure with the Yankees- Mattingly was an infield fixture- playing first- second- and third base- and earning nine Gold Gloves. Don would go on to win 9 Gold Gloves and be named to All-Star teams from 1984 thru 1989. His on field tenacity and his power at the plate earned Mattingly the title of Donnie Baseball. He finished his illustrious career with 2-153 hits- 222 home runs- 1-099 RBI's- and a .307 lifetime batting average. He is quite possibly the best Yankee player to have never played in a World Series with the team. On August 31- 1997 the Yankees retired his number 23 and dedicated his plaque for Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The plaque calls him A humble man of grace and dignity- a captain who led by example- proud of the Pinstripe tradition and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence- a Yankee forever.
